In April 1985 similar VRs DVG481 and DVG483, both Chester vehicles, lay over after coming in service from Helsby. The C30 was the direct route, originating in Warrington, but the C76 was the scenic route, via Mouldsworth and Ashton. A double decker was used during school term, since it was a return working to Chester after a school trip to Helsby Grammar School. The C76 left Helsby around 9 a.m., and a return trip around 2 p.m. from Chester would position a double decker for the return school working at 3 p.m.

If my memory serves me correctly, these DVGs were among the small batch which received Gardner 6XLC engines during a period when Gardner engines were in short supply. Crosville also took a number of Leyland 501 engined examples around that time, but unfortunately did not get any Leyland 680 engined machines, which were being taken by Bristol and Southdown around then.
